Cosmetic Surgery Quick Facts 2018

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reported over 1.5 million surgical cosmetic procedures in 2018 led by Breast Augmentation and Liposuction. The ASAPS also reported more than 3.3 million nonsurgical procedures in 2018.

2018 Cosmetic Surgery Highlights

  • Three historically less popular procedures have increased in popularity significantly in the past year. These include Thigh Lifts (up 24%), Chin Augmentation (up 20%) and Breast Reduction (up 18%).
  • Botox has been the #1 aesthetic procedure performed by plastic surgeons since 1999.
  • More than $1 billion was spent on injectables in 2018.
  • More than $1 billion was spent on silicone gel breast implants in 2018.
  • Of the 26,774 buttock augmentation procedures performed in 2018, 94% consisted of fat transfer.
  • Buttock augmentation and Labiaplasty are among the fastest growing surgical procedures, up 61% and 53%, respectively, in 5 years.
  • Patients aged 35–50 had the largest percentage of surgical procedures performed (39.5%).

Top Surgical Procedures by Age

The most common surgical procedures per age group in 2018 were:

  • Age 17 & under: Breast Reduction
  • Age 18-34: Breast Augmentation
  • Age 35-50: Liposuction
  • Age 51-64: Liposuction
  • Age 65 & over: Eyelid Surgery
