Cosmetic Surgery Quick Facts 2014

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, more than 10 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States in 2014. Surgical procedures accounted for 60% of total expenditures and nonsurgical procedures accounted for 40% of total expenditures.

2014 Cosmetic Surgery Highlights

  • Buttock Augmentation procedures increased by 86% and Labiaplasty increased by 49% in 2014.
  • In 2014, 80% of breast implants used were silicone and 20% were saline.
  • While some nonsurgical procedures decreased in 2014, nonsurgical fat reduction was a standout with a 43% increase.
  • Breast revisions were up 30% in 2014, which may be attributed to the fact that implants are not forever devices.
  • Where cosmetic surgeries were performed: office facility 56.3%, hospital 17.2%, free-standing surgical center 26%.
  • When procedures performed by physician assistants and nurse injectors are included, the total number of cosmetic non-invasive procedures performed in the United States in 2014 increases to over 13 million.

Women had more than 9.6 million cosmetic procedures in 2014, 90% of the total. The number of cosmetic procedures for women has increased over 429% since 1997.

The top five surgical procedures for women were:

  • Liposuction: 302,028
  • Breast Augmentation: 286,694
  • Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty): 156,449
  • Eyelid Surgery: 137,949
  • Breast Lift: 132,908

Top 5 Surgical Procedures for Men

Men had more than 1 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2014, 10% of the total. The number of cosmetic procedures for men has increased over 273% since 1997.

The top five surgical procedures for men were:

  • Liposuction: 40,466
  • Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty): 32,641
  • Eyelid Surgery: 27,765
  • Male Breast Reduction: 24,234
  • Facelift: 15,019

Top 5 Nonsurgical Procedures

The top five nonsurgical in 2014 were:

  • Botulinum Toxin: 3,588,218
  • Hyaluronic Acid: 1,696,621
  • Hair Removal: 828,480
  • Chemical Peel: 484,053
  • Microdermabrasion: 417,034

Cosmetic Surgery Age Distribution

Patients aged 35 to 50 has the most cosmetic surgery procedures with a total of 4.2 million.

  • Ages 35-50: 40.1%
  • Ages 51-64: 31%
  • Ages 19-34: 17.2%
  • Ages 65 & over: 10.4%
  • Ages 18 & under: 1.3%

The most common surgical procedure for each age group was:

  • Ages 35-50: Liposuction
  • Ages 51-64: Liposuction
