ASPS Finds Increase in Procedures Amidst Growing Social Acceptance and Continued Innovations

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the world's largest plastic surgery organization, has released the 2022 results of the organization's procedural research. According to this data, 26.2 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic and reconstructive procedures were performed in the United States in 2022. There was a 19% increase in cosmetic surgery procedures since 2019.

Top Cosmetic Surgical Procedures

Of the nearly 1.5 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2022, the top 5 were:

  • Liposuction — 325,669 procedures (up 23% from 2019)
  • Breast Augmentation — 298,568 (up 4%)
  • Abdominoplasty — 161,948 (up 37%)
  • Breast Lift — 143,364 (up 30%)
  • Eyelid Surgery — 115,261 (up 13%)

Additionally, breast reduction procedures saw a 54% surge from 2019 with 71,364 procedures. The past year also saw an 8% rise in facelift procedures and a 150% increase in cheek implants.

Top Cosmetic Minimally Invasive Procedures

Of the nearly 23.7 million cosmetic minimally invasive procedures performed in 2022, the top 5 were:

  • Neuromodulator Injections — 8,736,591 procedures (up 73% from 2019)
  • Hyaluronic Acid Fillers — 4,883,419 (up 70%)
  • Skin Resurfacing — 3,322,292
  • Skin Treatment, Combination Lasers — 2,915,199
  • Lip Augmentation with Injectable Materials — 1,378,631

Top Reconstructive Procedures

Of the nearly 1.02 million reconstructive procedures performed in 2022, the top 5 were:

  • Tumor Removal — 344,697 procedures (down 2% from 2019)
  • Hand Surgery — 204,412 (approximately the same)
  • Breast Reconstruction — 151,641 (up 12%)
  • Maxillofacial — 52,488 (down 29%)
  • Scar Revision — 50,930 (down 9%)
