Cosmetic Surgery Quick Facts
According to the American
Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, almost 10 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the
United States in 2009. Breast augmentation is the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure for women and the most popular
overall, with more than 311,000 procedures performed in 2009.

- Almost 10 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States in 2009.
Surgical procedures accounted for 15% of the total with nonsurgical procedures making up 85% of the total.
- From 2008-2009, there was a 2% decrease in the total number of cosmetic procedures.
Surgical procedures decreased by 17% while nonsurgical procedures increased by almost 1%.
- Since 1997, there has an increase of more than 147% in the total number of cosmetic procedures.
Surgical procedures increased by 50% while nonsurgical procedures increased by 231%.
- The top five cosmetic surgical procedures in 2009 were: breast augmentation (311,957), liposuction (283,735),
eyelid surgery (149,943), rhinoplasty (138,258) and abdominoplasty (127,923).
- 311,957 breast augmentation procedures
were performed in 2009, up 208.3% from 1997.
- Women ages 19 to 34 had the most breast augmentation procedures in 2009 with 51.1% of the total.
Ages 35-50 had 38.9%, 51-64 had 8.3%, 18 & younger had 0.9%, and 65 & over had 0.8%.
- 98,279 breast lift procedures were
performed in 2009, up 394.3% from 1997.
- 113,511 breast reduction procedures
for women were performed in 2009, up 137.1% from 1997.
- Women had over 9 million cosmetic procedures in 2009, more than 90% percent of the total.
Men had over 900,000 cosmetic procedures, more than 9%.
- The top five surgical procedures for women were breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty
and breast reduction.
- Where cosmetic surgeries were performed: office facility - 58%; hospital - 18%; free-standing surgicenter - 23%.
- Americans spent almost $10.5 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2009.
