Cosmetic Surgery Quick Facts
According to the American
Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, almost 11.7 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States in 2007. Breast augmentation
is the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure for women, with more than 399,000 procedures performed in 2007, a 4.1% increase from the
previous year.

- Nearly 11.7 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States in 2007. Surgical procedures accounted for nearly 18% of the total with nonsurgical procedures making up 82% of the total.
- From 2006 to 2007, there was a 2% increase in the total number of cosmetic procedures. Surgical procedures increased by 8% while nonsurgical procedures increased by 1%.
- Since 1997, there has been a 457% increase in the total number of cosmetic procedures. Surgical procedures have increased by 114% and nonsurgical procedures have increased by 754%.
- The top five surgical cosmetic procedures in 2007 were liposuction (456,828), breast augmentation (399,440), eyelid surgery (240,763), abdominoplasty (185,335) and breast reduction (153,087).
- 399,440 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2007, up 4.1% from 2006 and up 294.8% from 1997.
- Women ages 19 to 34 had the most breast augmentation procedures in 2007 with 51.5% of the total. Ages 35-50 had 39.2%, 51-64 had 6.6%, 18 & younger had 2%, and 65 & over had 0.7%.
- 126,178 breast lift procedures were performed in 2007, up 0.2% from 2006 and up 533% from 1997.
- 153,087 breast reduction procedures for women were performed in 2007, up 5% from 2006 and up 219.8% from 1997.
- Women had almost 10.6 million cosmetic procedures in 2007, 91% of the total. Men had almost 1.1 million cosmetic procedures, 9% of the total.
- The top five surgical procedures for women in 2007 were breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty and breast reduction.
- Where cosmetic surgeries were performed in 2007 — 54% in an office facility, 29% in a free-standing surgicenter and 17% in a hospital.
- Americans spent just under $13.2 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2007.
